Fun DIY birdfeeder activity kids of all ages are sure to love!

Birdwatching in the PNW!

By Holly Lewis March 8, 2023

We love spring over here at Macaroni KID North Sound. There’s something serene about waking up to the sound of birds singing that brings a sense of joy and excitement. While the return of the birds that fly south for the winter marks the return of warmer weather and more sunshine!

With the onset of spring, days getting longer and peeks of sunshine, I thought it was a perfect time to introduce my little ones to bird watching. North Sound Washington is a prime location for bird viewing with its natural habitats, pristine views and both natural and saltwater features throughout.

We learned that attracting birds isn’t difficult with a little edible persuasion, so we decided to try out a DIY birdfeeder.

These novel DIY birdfeeders bring an array of birds for feeding and viewing. For a fun spring theme, we used tulip and butterfly shaped cookie cutters to shape our feeders, but you can use any shape you like making this a great activity for any season, any theme.

Notes:

  • Allow birdfeeder to set for 8 hours; set overnight for optimal results.
  • After the birdfeeder has completely set, string your twine through the hole created in step 5.
  • Tie your birdfeeder anywhere near a shrub, bush or tree so that the birds have place to perch.
  • This bird feeder will not hold up once wet unfortunately. To help avoid this issue string somewhere with ample covering or consider placing over a tray or makeshift seed catcher.
  • With this recipe we got 11 palm sized bird feeders with the cookie cutters we used.
  • Ensure feeders have completely dried before packing or storing to prevent molding.

With simple ingredients, you can make these DIY Birdfeeders perfect for any occasion. The great thing about this recipe is that it makes enough feeders to share as gifts for neighbors, friends, and family.

Enjoy viewing the birds that come by to snack on this tasty bird treat! You’ll be surprised at the variety of birds you will attract with this fun DIY spring themed bird feeder.

Let me know if you tried this activity with your family, we love hearing your feedback!   mackidnorthsound@macaronikid.com
